DESCRIPTION

For its second consecutive year, BECA and Magnum Photos are pleased to present an exciting workshop with Rafał Milach this summer.

Join Magnum photographer Rafał Milach for a three-day workshop focused on documentary photography and the development of personal long-term projects.

Structured as intensive sessions of editing and sequencing exercises as well as group portfolio reviews, this workshop will offer strategies on how to present your work and enable participants to set individual project objectives. Since the last decades, Rafał Milach has been working on long-term projects around Eastern Europe exploring themes of history and transformation — leading to books publishing and exhibitions worldwide. With his experience, Rafał will be able to guide you onto your project’s approach and the upcoming steps you need to make.

This immersive and intimate group setting workshop invites applications from photographers seeking to enhance their personal projects.

This workshop is open to 12 participants and is suitable for photographers with a substantial body of work seeking guidance in the final stages of their projects, as well as photographers embarking on new projects and in the research stage. Each participant will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the editing process for long-term projects and selecting the optimal format for their presentation.

ABOUT RAFAŁ MILACH
Biography
Rafał Milach’s work explores themes of history and transformation–particularly within the former Soviet bloc using a myriad of mediums such as photography, conceptual art, books, video and curation. Though he initially tackled subjects through a traditional documentary perspective, his later projects draw on a more conceptual approach. Milach was born in 1978 in Poland and grew up during the collapse of the Soviet bloc. He studied graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland, before ‘falling in love’ with photography the first time he picked up a camera. He later studied at the IT Institute of Creative Photography of the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic, where he is currently a lecturer. His works have been widely exhibited in Poland and worldwide, and can be found in the collections of the MoMA Warsaw, CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, the ING Polish Art Foundation, Kiyosato, the Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan), and Brandts in Odense (Denmark). Milach joined Magnum as a nominee in 2018, and a full member in 2023.
