BECA and Magnum Photos are pleased to announce an exciting workshop with Olivia Arthur in Sofia, Bulgaria between 3-5 November, 2023. This immersive and intimate group setting workshop invites applications from photographers seeking to enhance their personal projects.
Join Magnum photographer Olivia Arthur for a three-day workshop focused on documentary photography and the development of personal long-term projects.
Structured as intensive sessions of lectures, editing and sequencing exercises, and group portfolio reviews, this workshop will offer strategies on how to present your work and enable participants to set individual project objectives. Whether your aim is to continue shooting, publish your project in a book or exhibit, this workshop will offer a round table discussion on the contemporary editorial environment, contextualising and shaping the vision of each photographer involved.
This workshop is open to 12 participants and is suitable for photographers with a substantial body of work seeking guidance in the final stages of their projects, as well as photographers embarking on new projects and in the research stage. Each participant will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the editing process for long-term projects and selecting the optimal format for their presentation.

Language: The workshop will be held in English.
Arthur was born in London and grew up in the UK. She studied mathematics at Oxford University and photojournalism at the London College of Printing. She began working as a photographer in 2003 after moving to Delhi and was based in India for two and a half years. In 2006, she left for Italy to take up a one-year residency with Fabrica, during which she began working on a series about women and cultural divides. Representation and the way we see ourselves are also areas of interest for Arthur. She explored these themes in her project In Private/Mumbai (2016-2018) about sexuality in India and through her ‘Portrait of a City’ commission about young people for Hull, City of Culture (2017).
Arthur’s work has been shown in publications including The New Yorker, Vogue and TIME magazine among others and selected commercial clients include British Airways, Capeb and BNP Paribas. She has received support from the Inge Morath Award, the National Media Museum, OjodePez-PhotoEspana Award for Human Values.
In 2010, she co-founded Fishbar, a publisher and space for photography in London, with Philipp Ebeling. Arthur continues to return to India and to work in London where she lives.
Olivia Arthur became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2013.

- BECA and Magnum reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice.
- BECA and Magnum reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
- Cancellations: BECA and Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs except for a 10% of the costs for administrative fee, if you inform us of cancellation at least 45 days before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 44 and 30 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 29 days before the Workshop commences.
- The fee does not include travel to and from the workshop, accommodations and meals.
