Description
Sabiha Çimen, whose acclaimed debut photobook Hafiz (2021) received the Paris Photo/Aperture First PhotoBook Award, will guide you on your project’s approach and the next steps. Her work, deeply rooted in themes of women, Islamic culture, portraiture, and still life, brings a unique and sensitive perspective to visual storytelling. Over two days, you’ll dive deeply into the art of sequencing and editing, with hands-on exercises, group portfolio reviews, and personalized feedback to help you refine your visual narrative. This workshop is designed to empower you to present your work more effectively—to industry professionals, and public audiences alike.
This immersive and intimate group setting workshop invites photographers seeking to get a better understanding of the subjective process of editing and sequencing a body of work and how this can transform the way you see and approach your projects.
Editing is a hugely important and valuable process with different stages and uses. Not to be confused with post-processing your images with programs like Lightroom or Photoshop, editing is the process of looking deeply at the photographs you are making, to interrogate them with a critical eye, to review and reject the weak images, and to find something remarkable on the contact sheet or screen.
This workshop is open to 12 participants + 1 scholarship and is suitable for photographers with a substantial body of work seeking guidance in the final stages of their projects, as well as photographers embarking on new projects and in the research stage. Each participant will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the editing process for long-term projects and selecting the optimal format for their presentation.

The fee covers the workshop itself. It does not cover accommodation, travel to the workshop location, and meals.

We recommend waiting until the workshop has the minimum number of participants before booking your trip. As soon as the workshop is confirmed, we will send out an email notification, at which point you can book your trip.
Full fees must be paid prior to the start of the workshop. BECA and Magnum Photos reserve the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice. BECA and Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
Cancellations: If you decide to cancel for any reason, the cancellation must be confirmed to us in writing. If you notify us at least 90 days before the first day of the Workshop, we will refund all workshop fees minus a 10% administrative fee. If you cancel between 89 and 60 days before the Workshop begins, 50% of the workshop fees will be charged. If you cancel fewer than 60 days before the Workshop begins, 100% of the workshop fees will be charged.

Biography: Sabiha Çimen was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1986. She is a self-taught photographer, focusing on women, Islamic culture, portraiture, and still life. Çimen graduated from Istanbul Bilgi University with an undergraduate degree in international trade and finance, and a master’s degree in cultural studies. In 2021, Çimen was honored with the Light Work Artist Residency. In 2020, she was named a W. Eugene Smith Fund recipient, was awarded the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant, and won second prize in the Long-Term Projects category at the World Press Photo Awards. In 2018, she won third prize in the PHmuseum Women Photographers Grant. For her debut book, Hafiz (2021), she received the Paris Photo/Aperture First PhotoBook Award. Çimen joined Magnum Photos in 2020, became an associate member in 2022, and a full member in 2024. She lives between Istanbul and New York.
